Fashion campaigns proving age is just a number
For the past few weeks, the fashion world has been abuzz with new season campaigns and young models strutting their stuff on the runways of the world. However, a new genre in modelling has emerged and it seems, age has nothing and everything to do with it.
Here are 5 fabulous fashion campaigns featuring 50+ models:
1. Céline Summer 2015 Campaign
When 80-year-old American author, Joan Didion, was asked by a reporter about the excitement surrounding her Céline fashion campaign, she simply replied, “I have no clue.” Her nonchalant response was truly the echo to her effortless, chic demeanor in that campaign photo, which was shot by photographer, Juergen Teller.
2. Dolce & Gabbana Summer 2015 Campaign
Ahead of their summer 2015 campaign, Italian fashion powerhouse, Dolce & Gabbana, uploaded an image of three stylish, older ladies to their Instagram page, with a caption that read: “The laughter of a woman of any age is synonymous of pure beauty.” The campaign, which also extended to Dolce & Gabbana’s eyewear collection, had some wondering if the images were more of a gimmick than a real game-changer in mature age fashion. What do you think?
3. Kate Spade Spring 2015 Campaign
Escape the ordinary. That’s the tagline for Kate Spade’s spring campaign advertisement, featuring 93 year old, Iris Apfel, alongside Victoria’s Secret model, Karlie Kloss. Apfel may be the new face of the campaign, but this eccentric American socialite is definitely no stranger to the limelight. In 2005, The NY Metropolian Museum of Art celebrated Apfel’s original style, typically revealed in her mixing of high and low fashion, with a dedicated exhibition entitled, Rara Avis.
4. Saint Laurent Spring 2015 Campaign
What do Pierce Brosnan’s teenage son, Dylan, and folk rock icon, Joni Mitchell, 71, have in common? They have both made their modeling debut for French label, Saint Laurent. In the Music Project campaign, Mitchell appears in a series of black and white photographs, shot in her Bel Air home, strumming a guitar, and donning a tunic from Saint Laurent’s Folk collection.
5. Gap ‘Dress Normal’ series
Angelica Huston, 63, has graced the covers of high-end fashion magazines for more than 40 years. But what does this leggy beauty like to wear every day? “Basically, a good pair of blue or black jeans, a really nice white shirt, and a black leather jacket,” she said in an interview with Voguein late 2014. It was a no-brainer for Gap to feature Huston as the face of their ‘Dress Normal’ series.
And it's not just older women gracing fashion billboards. In 2008, Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, then 64, proved that the rugged rock n' roll look is still trending, when he was chosen as the face of Louis Vuitton's heritage campaign.
