Vivid light festival: bright lights, big city
Paris has Nuit Blanche and St Petersburg has the White Nights but the largest city lighting event in the world is Vivid Sydney that, this year, runs for 18 nights from Friday May 22 to Monday June 8. The Light Walk in the city extends over 60 installations and there are new precincts in Chatswood, Central Park, Pyrmont and Redfern. Looking at the animated map is an enchanting preview . There are also 150 ideas events and a variety of musical performances as part of Vivid.
The place to be
This winter travel event is now so big that Destination NSW has launched an app dedicated to showing the people of China how the city if transformed by Vivid. Last year almost 10,000 visitors from China came to Sydney on Vivid Sydney travel packages. They were just some of the record 1.43 million attendees in 2014.
Turn up the volume
A variety of special musical events are lined up to help celebrate this light festival. Events are being held in 14 locations around Sydney from hipster clubs to the Opera House. Highlights of the 96 shows profiling 191 artists are Grace Jones at Carriageworks in Eveleigh on 31st May and 1st June (ticket prices from $127) and the silent disco at Central Park in Chippendale featuring two DJs and three audio channels. Hit the dance floor with headphones for free every Friday and Saturday night 5:30-9:30pm.
