Only when we go to hotels or on a cruise do we realise that towels can be a lot fluffier and softer than our old ones at home.

Katarzyna Kurylek, Head of Laundry at the London Hilton, shares her tips.

1. Shake it out.

“Give your towels a good shake before loading them into the washing machine,” advises Katarzyna. “This opens up the fibres slightly to allow the detergent to sink inside.”

2. Pick the right detergent.

“If your washing machine runs on hard water, look for a specialist detergent with softening properties that will stop the texture of your towels turning harsh,” she says.

3. Don't overdo the conditioner.

“Always make sure you're using just the right amount of conditioner to prevent depleting quality,” she says.

4. Tumble dry with care.

“Where possible, try drying towels out in the fresh air before popping them into the dryer for a brief spell to fluff them up,” says Katarzyna.

5. Throw in a tennis ball.

Add a tennis ball or two into your dryer,” she says. “It's another great way to fluff up your towels as they bounce around, and it is completely safe.”
