A man accused of leaving his dog in a car for several hours in Sydney’s southwest has been charged.

Police were alerted after a passerby spotted the dog in a distressed state inside a vehicle parked in a Padstow driveway at around 10 am on Monday.

According to NSW Police, officers attended and located the Toyota sedan with the engine running before the owner, a 49-year-old man, returned to the vehicle and spoke with officers.

The five-year-old Rottweiler cross was taken to the local vet, where she was declared deceased.

The man was charged with committing an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, leaving a vehicle with the engine on, and not removing the ignition key (vehicle unattended).

He is scheduled to appear at Bankstown Local Court on January 14.
