A family day at the beach turned to horror as a father watched a car plunge 50 metres down a cliff and injure his partner and their one-year-old baby.

Emergency services were called to Bar Beach in Newcastle around 10:30 am on Thursday after reports said a car had driven off a cliff.

A 40-year-old woman was holding her one-year-old baby and was hit by the car as her partner watched on.

Luckily, off-duty doctors were among the witnesses who rushed to help.

Emergency services are calling it a “miracle” that no one was seriously hurt.

“They are very lucky to be alive, it was a significant fall from the cliff,” NSW Ambulance Inspector Jason Saper said in a statement.

The baby had minor scratches but her mother was taken to hospital with leg fractures.

The driver of the car was treated at the scene for minor injuries and was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash and are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
