A massive search is underway for a police dog who became separated from his handler during a pursuit.

On Tuesday morning, PD Quizz, a three-year-old sable German Shepherd, was with his handler as they were chasing an alleged car thief in Ipswich when he became separated in thick bushland.

In a statement, police said, “Around 3am, the dog squad were called to track an offender who allegedly ran from a stolen vehicle near Greenwood Village Road. Police Dog Quizz commenced a pursuit, however he became separated from his handler.”

The search has involved helicopters, mounted police and the SES, but they have not been able to find him.

PD Quizz has a black and tan hide and was wearing a black harness with a long tracking lead when he disappeared. Queensland Police Service Inspector Mick Thiesfield told Sunrise, “There has been sightings and we encourage any members of the public who may see him to call police.

“If you’ve got a mobile phone, take a picture of him, don’t approach him, and we’ll send police down.”

Quizz’s handler had been involved in the search, but Inspector Thiesfield said, “We’ve had to send him home to bed a few times as you’d understand.”
