The Royal Australian Mint has released a new coloured 50 cent coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Indian Pacific train.

The new 50 cent coin is legal tender and depicts the transcontinental train that operates between Sydney and Perth besides the engraving ‘INDIAN PACIFIC 1970 – 2020’.

The release of the special batch followed last year’s launch of the The Ghan and 3801 – A Legend of Steam coins.

Peter Egglestone, chief commercial officer at Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions, said it was an honour to have the Indian Pacific’s special milestone recognised in a coin.

“The Indian Pacific is a truly transcontinental rail adventure that journeys across the Nullarbor, through mountain ranges and rocky valleys and across arid deserts,” Egglestone said.

“The inaugural journey nearly 50 years ago was a significant achievement, which has now developed into the all-inclusive guest experience today with regionally-inspired food and wine, world-class service and Off Train Excursions.”

There are 30,000 coins in existence, each of which is sold at $15.
