The best low-maintenance indoor plants
The indoor plant trend hit a few years back and everyone’s been going bananas over greenery ever since.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: I’ve had indoor plants for decades! I hear you. But there has been a huge rise in brands releasing stylish pots, hooks and hangers to display plants in. And it’s making our homes all the more attractive to look at as a result.
Aloe doesn't need frequent watering
But not all of us are the greatest green thumbs (myself included). So let me introduce you to some of the easiest plants to keep alive at home, and then show you some great ways to display them while we’re at it.
Top 5 low-maintenance indoor plants
1. Mother in law’s tongue
This one I have in my own home and can attest to how well it will thrive on neglect. I water it when I remember to (once a week or so) and it’s still going strong.
This gorgeous variety hates frequent watering, so you can leave it to its own devices and it’ll thank you for it. The medicinal properties of Aloe are an added bonus, so grab a few and plant away.
The Pothos loves to travel across a room, so just trim down the shoots depending on how long or short you want them to be. It only needs watering when the soil is almost dry (stick your finger in the pot to check).
The low maintenance Pothos can be trimmed as long or short as you wish
4. Spider plant
As long as you have bright to medium lighting conditions in your room, the spider plant will thrive. Keep the soil evenly moist and they’ll thrive for years to come. Added bonus: cut off one of its bulbs, pot it, and a new plant will grow.
5. Rubber plant
The rubber plant is lush and leafy, with wonderfully shiny leaves. Let the top half of the soil dry out before watering, keep it in medium to bright spaces, and it’ll thank you for it.
Style ideas for indoor plants
It’s time to think outside the box when it comes to the pots you put your indoor plants in. Nowadays, brands are creating pots with dramatic colours and patterns all over them.

There’s been a big shift toward elevating plants off the ground in recent years. Local brand Ivy Muse is at the forefront of this trend and have tonnes of plant stands in varying heights and shapes. It makes a real design moment of your indoor plant display!
If you’re stuck for floor space or want to display your plants in an eye-catching way, consider plant hangers. Aussie brand Capra Designs produces some really interesting hangers that are works of art in their own right.
Even if you’re a black thumb, it’s comforting to know that there are plant varieties out there for you and your home. And when displayed in new and interesting ways around the house, friends and family will think you’re a genius when it comes to greenery!
