12. Winter Palace St Petersburg, Russia
Occupying an entire block facing the Neva River, this baroque green-and-white confection designed by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli shows both the power and taste of the Czars. It was built to be used as their winter palace and each of the 1000 rooms vies with the next for over-the-top ornate grandeur. It’s now the perfect home for the 2.7 million artworks held by the Hermitage Museum.
