The recent election victory of Aung San Suu Kyi and the defeat of the 50-year-old military government in Myanmar continues the process of bringing this once-reclusive country into mainstream Southeast Asian travel. More hotels are opening in Yangon and Mandalay and many tourist boats already ply the Irrawaddy. The days when you could only visit for one week on a very restricted itinerary are long gone. Myanmar has the richness of the gold-plated Shwedagon Pagoda, the temple complexes of Bagan and Yangon still has many grand architectural reminders of colonial times. Want to visit?
