Many people will have a tub of Vicks VapoRub in the medicine cabinet. But besides soothing coughs and colds, there are some other less obvious uses for this household staple.

1. Reduce swelling

Vicks VapoRub has anti-inflammatory properties so can help to soothe sore spots such as strains or bruises, or muscle soreness. It also works on blemishes if you leave it on overnight.

2. Soothes headache

Simply rub some Vicks VapoRub on your temples and forehead to reduce the severity of your headache.

3. Helps cuts and splinters

Dab some Vicks VapoRub on your splinter or cut to help the healing process.

4. Soothe hemorrhoid itch

If you’ve run out of your usual ointment you can use a bit of Vicks VapoRub to help alleviate the itch.

5. Repels bugs

If you are having trouble with mosquitoes or flies you can use Vicks VapoRub to repel them. They don’t like the scent and it works in the same way as insect repellant.

6. Soften sore feet

Make your own home remedy for sore cracked heels or toenail fungus with Vicks VapoRub. Just rub some in to the affected areas before bed for two to three nights running, and then pop on a pair of cotton socks.

7. Keep cats away

If you’ve got a problem with neighbourhood cats coming and urinating on your garden furniture or doors, simply smear some Vicks VapoRub on their favourite spots. They don’t like the smell and it might help keep them from coming back.
