Australia’s son of swimming Ian Thorpe has been admitted to hospital last weekend following complications resulting from shoulder surgery.

Emerald City have revealed the sporting superstar spent time in intensive care at Macquarie University Hospital last week as he battled a serious infection he contracted while in hospital.

It is understood the 38-year-old was admitted to have an abscess removed, believed to be related to previous shoulder surgeries.

A spokesperson for the five-time Olympic gold medallist assured Emerald City that Thorpe’s health was “all good now” after five days in hospital. He was released on Thursday night.

Since retiring from swimming for the second time in 2013, Thorpe has endured several health setbacks including treatment for depression. In 2014, he was admitted to intensive care due to another infection and his initial shoulder operation.

Thorpe’s next move will see him appear on Celebrity MasterChef alongside Gordon Ramsays daughter Tilly, actress Rebecca Gibney and singer Dami Im.
