Cyndi Lauper’s son, Declyn “Dex” Thornton Lauper, has been arrested after he was allegedly found sitting in a stolen car.

New York City Police claim to have found the 24-year-old sitting in a stolen 2014 Mercedes C350 in the early hours of Thursday morning, as reported by People.

According to police, officers noticed the car due to it being illegally double-parked in upper Manhattan, and after a quick check realised it had been reported as stolen two years ago, with TMZ reporting that the plates were registered to a different vehicle.

Dex told officers he had parked the car there to attend a memorial for a 14-year-old rapper who was stabbed at a subway station in July, per the New York Post.

After his arrest, Dex was charged with felony unauthorised use of a vehicle and eventually released with a notice to appear in court.

Representatives for Lauper and Dex haven’t responded to requests for comment, according to People.

Dex, the only child of the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer and her actor husband David Thornton, is a musician with a significant following on social media, where he even shared what appeared to be footage of his alleged arrest.

Lauper has previously spoken about the impact her fame has had on Dex growing up, telling the Guardian that “people look at him and he feels the pressure of being my son”.

“Someone came up to me in the street and kept talking and talking,” she recalled in the 2008 interview.

“Declyn said afterwards, ‘Who are you?’ And I said, ‘I’m a mommy’. And he said, ‘No, you’re not – you’re Cyndi Lauper!’”

Dex and Lauper’s husband appeared with her on her reality series, Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual, which ran for one season in 2013.
