It has just been 24 hours since Tasmania’s borders were opened to most of mainland Australia, and now Premier Peter Gutwein has announced residents from NSW will be able to enter the island state from November 6.
Tassie was the first Australian state to shut its border when the COVID-19 pandemic arose.
They only just opened their borders to allow quarantine-free entry for travellers from the low-risk states and territories of South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT on Monday.
Travellers from New Zealand were also given the opportunity to travel quarantine-free, but will have to transit via the mainland as Tasmania doesn’t have an international airport.
NSW had been considered medium-risk to Tasmania until Tuesday.
However, restrictions are set to be lifted from November 6 after the state revised NSW’s COVID numbers.
Mr Gutwein said that while the move is still subject to public health advice, it would mean that the state’s hard border control will only be applied to Victoria until December.
